Background: Presence of auditory hallucination is considered to be the frontline diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia. The present study aimed to evaluate the pattern of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) among patients diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia.
Materials and method: Consented patients (N=52) were asked individually to detail about their experience of persistent auditory hallucinations using a semi-structured interview schedule. Data was pooled and analyzed using Microsoft Excel-2007.
Results: Mean age at first hearing voices was 26 years, and 50% of them reported to hear voices for about a few minutes a day. 11.5% of them reported that their voices were hostile and many (69.2%) of them heard voices of more than one person talking at a time. Commenting type of AVH was more (84.6%), voices more (61.5%) frequently heard during evening time. Majority (57.7%) of them reported to hear voices which are of both male and female and 50% of them it was not from anyone they known before. 88% reported that the intensity of AVH was more when they are alone and 65.4% of them reported to be relieved when they started doing something interesting. 50% them reported that the medications have no effect over AVH.
Discussion: The result of the study may be used to increase understanding of the pattern of AVH among chronic schizophrenia and to be more empathetic in formulating nursing care plans to help those troubled voice hearers by incorporating more adaptive self help strategies to deal with it.

Major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorders not only affect the individual but also the persons who are in their family too. An exploratory study was undertaken with an aim to identify how family members perceive that having another member in their family with major mental illness could affect their life. Data was obtained from 120 family members who accompanied with the mentally ill persons during their visits to a psychiatric outpatient unit using a structured interview schedule. Data was pooled and analyzed based on the objectives of the study using SPSS v.12. There were no statistical differences in the item-specific or domain-wise mean impact scores between spouses and non-spouses. Planning interventions including the family members would be beneficial towards speedy recovery among patients with major mental illness. Keywords

Instrument measuring the family caregivers' competency in meeting the needs of the persons diagnosed with schizophrenia when discharged and being in home is not been tested and presented anywhere in the literature. This study was carried out among family caregivers to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of an instrument on home management care competency measurement in the form of a checklist. A mixed-methods design was adopted to develop and test the psychometric properties of Home Management Checklist-Schizophrenia (HMCL-S). A pool of 40 items formulated based on the review of literature and validated by the subject experts was tested among randomly selected 50 family caregivers for its psychometric evaluation. Final tool consisted of 32-items having dichotomous response having the content validity index of 0.87, and high internal consistency (Chronbach α = 0.84). The study findings suggest that the HMCL-S has sufficient reliability and validity to evaluate the family caregivers' competency in meeting the needs of the persons diagnosed with schizophrenia. Keywords
